Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is typically managed by a pulmonologist or a cardiologist, often one with specialized training or experience in PH. In many cases, patients with PH are cared for by a multidisciplinary team at a PH specialty center, which might include:
- Pulmonologists: Focus on lung-related causes and effects of PH.
- Cardiologists: Especially heart failure or interventional cardiologists, who address the impact of PH on the heart and manage complications like right heart failure.
- Rheumatologists: For patients with PH due to autoimmune or connective tissue diseases (e.g., scleroderma, lupus).
- Hematologists: In cases where PH is related to blood clotting disorders or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).
- PH Nurse Practitioners or Coordinators: They provide ongoing patient education and help coordinate treatment and follow-up care.
For more advanced cases, or if a patient requires specific treatments (e.g., advanced medications, lung transplantation), they may also see a transplant specialist or surgeon at a major medical center with a PH program.
