Interventional Cardiologist | Medical Director
Dr Stanley Chia is an interventional cardiologist and the Medical Director of Asian Heart and Vascular Centre. He trained at the National University of Singapore and completed Advanced Specialist Training in Cardiology at the National University Heart Centre Singapore (NUHCS), where he subsequently served as a Senior Consultant and Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.
Dr Stanley Chia undertook fellowship training in interventional cardiology at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC, USA, one of the highest-volume interventional centres in the United States. He has been an invited faculty member and proctor at major international cardiology conferences including TCT, EuroPCR, and TCTAP, and has demonstrated live coronary intervention cases via satellite transmission to audiences across Asia, the United States, and Europe. He has served as a principal investigator in international multi-centre trials and contributed to clinical practice guidelines in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region. He holds an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

Dr Stanley Chia works closely with each patient to understand their clinical background and treatment goals before recommending an approach. He uses intravascular imaging routinely to guide complex coronary intervention and applies physiological assessment tools such as FFR and iFR to determine the significance of coronary lesions. He is experienced in treating patients with complex multi-vessel disease, heavily calcified lesions, and those who have declined or are unsuitable for bypass surgery.
What does Dr Stanley Chia specialise in?
Dr Stanley Chia is an interventional cardiologist specialising in complex coronary intervention, including left main artery stenting, chronic total occlusion (CTO) intervention, and rotational atherectomy for calcified lesions. He uses intravascular imaging and physiological assessment tools to guide treatment decisions.
What is rotational atherectomy?
Rotational atherectomy is a technique used during coronary angioplasty to treat heavily calcified coronary lesions. A small burr rotating at high speed is used to modify the calcium within the artery wall, allowing the vessel to be dilated and stented more effectively. Dr Stanley Chia performs rotational atherectomy at AHVC.
What is FFR and iFR?
Fractional flow reserve (FFR) and instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) are pressure-based measurements taken during coronary angiography to assess whether a blockage is significantly affecting blood flow to the heart. They help guide decisions about whether a coronary lesion requires stenting. Dr Stanley Chia uses these assessments routinely at AHVC.
What is intravascular imaging?
Intravascular imaging — including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) — allows cardiologists to visualise the inside of coronary arteries during a procedure. It provides detailed information about plaque composition, vessel size, and stent deployment that is not available from conventional angiography alone.
