About Dr Stanley Chia

Dr Stanley Chia is an interventional cardiologist specialising in complex coronary artery disease, with expertise in left main disease, chronic total occlusion (CTO), calcified lesions, intravascular imaging, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). He has performed over 5,000 coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures. He trained at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

Dr Chia graduated with honours from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1997. He was awarded the British Heart Foundation Scholarship and Junior Research Fellowship to pursue a doctorate at the University of Edinburgh (2000–2002) under Professors Keith Fox and David Newby, earning his MD in 2006 for research on endothelial function and inflammation. His research on inflammation in cardiovascular disease was presented at the British Cardiac Society Young Research Worker's Prize. He was awarded both the National Medical Research Council Medical Research Fellowship and the Ministry of Health Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP) Award for further specialisation in interventional cardiology. He trained as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School and as an interventional cardiology fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston (2006–2008), under Harvard professors Dr Igor Palacios and Dr Ik-Kyung Jang. Prior to entering private practice, he was Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the National Heart Centre Singapore and Clinical Senior Lecturer and Cardiology Residency Program Director at the National University of Singapore Faculty of Medicine.

Media Coverage

Clinical Approach

Dr Chia's clinical focus is on complex coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndromes, particularly in patients for whom surgery is not an option. He provides tailored management for patients facing the most technically demanding coronary interventions, integrating intravascular imaging such as OCT to guide precision treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Dr Stanley Chia specialise in?

Dr Stanley Chia specialises in complex coronary artery disease, including left main disease, chronic total occlusion, and heavily calcified lesions. He uses intravascular imaging including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and performs rotational atherectomy and complex bifurcation PCI.

What is optical coherence tomography (OCT) in cardiology?

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an intravascular imaging technique that uses light waves to produce detailed images of the interior of coronary arteries. It provides high-resolution visualisation of plaque, stent deployment, and vessel wall, enabling precise guidance of coronary intervention.

What is rotational atherectomy?

Rotational atherectomy is a catheter-based technique used to treat heavily calcified coronary artery blockages. A small rotating burr is used to modify calcified plaque, allowing balloon dilation and stent placement. It is used in complex cases where conventional angioplasty alone is insufficient.
