He specialises in complex coronary intervention including left main artery stenting and chronic total occlusion (CTO). He has received awards at international CTO conferences and spearheaded the radial approach to coronary intervention at Changi General Hospital. He is an invited faculty member at major international conferences including SingLife and TCTAP.

Dr Tan graduated from Leicester University, UK in 1989 and completed cardiology training in 1999. He undertook a fellowship in echocardiography in Sydney, Australia, during which he published research in the subspecialty. Clinical Approach

Dr Tan ensures patients have adequate time during consultations to understand their condition and consider their options. Chronic total occlusion intervention is a technically demanding procedure requiring extended procedure time. Dr Tan has developed experience across the range of techniques required to perform this procedure and is regularly invited to speak on the topic at international conferences. He also sees patients with left main artery disease and multi-vessel disease who have declined or are unsuitable for bypass surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chronic total occlusion (CTO)?

Chronic total occlusion refers to a complete blockage of a coronary artery that has been present for an extended period. CTO can sometimes be treated with a catheter-based procedure (PCI), which may allow some patients to avoid bypass surgery. Dr Tan Chong Hiok performs CTO intervention at AHVC.

What does Dr Tan Chong Hiok specialise in?

Dr Tan Chong Hiok specialises in complex coronary intervention, including chronic total occlusion (CTO) and left main artery stenting, as well as echocardiography. He holds accredited training in both interventional cardiology and echocardiography.

What is the radial approach in coronary intervention?

The radial approach refers to performing coronary angiography or angioplasty via an artery in the wrist rather than the groin. It is associated with reduced bleeding risk and faster recovery. Dr Tan Chong Hiok established this approach at Changi General Hospital and continues to use it at AHVC.
