Dr Liew integrates contemporary scientific data and clinical guidelines, including the use of contemporary biomarkers, to help patients develop a thorough understanding of their cardiovascular risk factors and reinforce preventive measures. He has observed an increasing number of acute heart attack cases in younger patients and emphasises upstream screening and a tailored approach to cardiovascular risk management.
What does Dr Liew Boon Wah Matthew specialise in?
Dr Liew specialises in coronary artery disease, using both invasive and non-invasive techniques. His focus includes coronary artery intervention, intravascular imaging, acute coronary syndrome management, and prevention of ischaemic heart disease.
What is coronary artery disease?
Coronary artery disease occurs when the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked, typically due to the build-up of plaque. It can lead to chest pain (angina) or a heart attack. Treatment options include medication, coronary angioplasty, and bypass surgery.
What is intravascular imaging?
Intravascular imaging refers to techniques used during coronary procedures to visualise the inside of blood vessels, enabling precise assessment of blockages and guidance of treatment. Common techniques include intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
