About Dr Cliff Wong

Dr Cliff Wong is a cardiologist specialising in heart failure, cardiac electrophysiology, and cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). He trained at the National University of Singapore and completed Advanced Specialist Training in Cardiology at the National University Heart Centre Singapore (NUHCS), where he subsequently served as a Senior Consultant in the Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing department.

Dr Cliff Wong undertook a Ministry of Health overseas training scholarship, completing fellowships in cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany and at the Heart Center Leipzig in Germany. He has been an invited faculty member and proctor for cardiac device implantation procedures and has contributed to the training of junior cardiologists in Singapore. He served as a clinical investigator in international multi-centre trials and contributed to clinical practice guidelines in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region.

Clinical Approach

Dr Cliff Wong’s practice focuses on identifying and treating the underlying cause of heart failure alongside device therapy where indicated. He works closely with patients to optimise medical management and ensure they understand their condition, treatment options, and the role of implantable devices in their care. He has a particular interest in patients who have not responded adequately to conventional therapy and may benefit from advanced device-based treatments such as cardiac resynchronisation therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Dr Cliff Wong specialise in?

Dr Cliff Wong specialises in heart failure, cardiac electrophysiology, and cardiac implantable electronic devices, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices.

What is cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT)?

Cardiac resynchronisation therapy is a treatment for heart failure in which a specialised pacemaker is used to coordinate the contractions of the heart’s chambers, improving its pumping efficiency. It is used in patients with heart failure and a specific type of electrical conduction delay. Dr Cliff Wong performs CRT implantation at AHVC.

What is an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)?

An ICD is a small device implanted under the skin that continuously monitors heart rhythm and delivers a shock if a life-threatening arrhythmia is detected. It is used in patients at risk of sudden cardiac death. Dr Cliff Wong implants both conventional and subcutaneous ICDs.

What is a leadless pacemaker?

A leadless pacemaker is a self-contained device implanted directly into the heart without the need for leads (wires). It is smaller than a conventional pacemaker and does not require a pocket under the skin. Dr Cliff Wong performs leadless pacemaker implantation at AHVC.
