About Dr Chuang Hsuan-Hung

Dr Chuang Hsuan-Hung is a cardiologist with subspecialty expertise in advanced cardiac imaging and heart failure. He trained in Taiwan and completed fellowship training in advanced cardiac imaging and heart failure at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Harvard Medical School, in the United States. He subsequently undertook further training in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, UK.

Dr Chuang joined the National University Heart Centre Singapore (NUHCS) in 2016, where he served as a Senior Consultant and co-director of the Advanced Cardiac Imaging programme. He has been an invited speaker at international cardiology conferences and has contributed to peer-reviewed publications in cardiac imaging and heart failure. He holds a concurrent appointment as Assistant Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

Clinical Approach

Dr Chuang takes an imaging-guided approach to the diagnosis and management of heart disease, using advanced cardiac imaging techniques to characterise disease at a structural and functional level before determining the most appropriate treatment strategy. He has a particular interest in cardiomyopathies, where CMR plays a central role in diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment planning, and in cardio-oncology, where he works with oncology teams to monitor and manage cardiovascular toxicity in patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Dr Chuang Hsuan-Hung specialise in?

Dr Chuang Hsuan-Hung specialises in advanced cardiac imaging and heart failure. His focus includes cardiac MRI, advanced echocardiography, cardiac CT, cardiomyopathies, and cardio-oncology. He trained at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard) and the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.

What is cardiac MRI (CMR)?

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is an advanced non-invasive imaging technique that provides detailed information about the structure, function, and tissue characteristics of the heart. It is particularly useful in the assessment of cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, and congenital heart disease. Dr Chuang Hsuan-Hung performs and interprets CMR at AHVC.

What is cardio-oncology?

Cardio-oncology is a subspecialty focused on the cardiovascular health of cancer patients, including the prevention, detection, and management of heart problems caused by cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Dr Chuang Hsuan-Hung has experience in this field and works with oncology teams to provide integrated cardiovascular care.

What is a cardiomyopathy?

Cardiomyopathy refers to a group of diseases affecting the heart muscle, leading to impaired pumping function or abnormal heart rhythms. Common types include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, and infiltrative cardiomyopathies such as cardiac amyloidosis. Advanced imaging, particularly CMR, plays an important role in their diagnosis and management.
